Park cross country runners fly at Red Wing

Park’s boys finished second and the Wolfpack girls were third in the team races Friday in the Red Wing Invitational cross country meet.

Sophomore Jana Hafiz finished ninth in a time of 22;46.41, which also put her into Park’s all-time best list. Kalin Randrup was 12th in 23:05.48, Allie Devine was 14th in 23:8.41, Mya Albrecht 17th in 23:59.63, Aria Waletzko 19th in 24:13.59, Hollen Thompson 26th in 24:52.62 and Esme Edlund 27th in 25:04.94.

Winona narrowly won the girls team race with a score of 52, followed by 2, Hastings, 54; 3, Park 66, 4, Raache, 74; and 5, Red Wing, 100.

“It’s fun to see how much the girls are improving from meet to meet,” said Park co-head coach Brad Narveson. “Five of our 13 runners set personal bests. Jana ran cracked our all-time 5K list. She’s now tied for 15th all time in school history for 5K times. She’s running really well right now and looked strong today. Kalin is getting back to where she ended last year which is great to see. She had a great race at Red Wing. And then Allie, Mya, and Aria did a great job keeping our pack together and helping us finish third as a team.

Park senior Gavin Stauffer finished third in 16:49.78, narrowly edging junior teammate Eli Firchau who finished fourth in 16:52.90. Henry Joa of the Wolfpack also had a top 10 finish, coming in eighth in 17:08.08. Ben Paulsen was 21st in 18:31.35, Will Mann 25th in 18:57.65, Samuel Craig 33rd in 19:28.87, Jayden Rentz 39th in 19:52.90 and Miles Kaiser 43rd in 21:11.34.

Winona won the boys team title with just 26 points. Park was second with 61, Hastings third with 68, Raache fourth with 89, Red Wing fifth with 118 and East Ridge sixth with 138.

“The boys continue to run well,” said Narveson. “Gavin and Eli seem to be going back and forth as our number one runner. They’re great teammates. They’re happy for each other but they are also competitive, so it drives both of them to be better. Henry PR’d and is looking very strong as our third runner. And if I had to pick a runner of the meet it would be Liam Fleming. He PR’d by a minute and a half and finished second in the JV race (in 18:38.87). He’s improved so much from last year. Very proud of him for all the hard work he’s put in.”

Park competes in the Simley Invitational Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m.
