The National Association of Counties (NACo) announced on Thursday that Washington County Commissioner Karla Bigham, District 4, has been appointed to four of the association’s committees. These appointments are:
• Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee: Vice Chair of Law Enforcement Subcommittee.
• Arts and Culture Commission.
• Resilient Counties Advisory Board.
• Rural Action Caucus (RAC).
NACo President James Gore stated that Bigham was chosen because of her dedication to NACo. He mentioned that her active participation and leadership help NACo represent America's counties effectively.
“I am honored to be named to these four NACo committees,” said Bigham. “During my service on these committees, I will work to fearlessly advocate for the needs of Washington County and the rest of the counties across Minnesota and the U.S.”
The Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee meets throughout the year to discuss and recommend policies on issues like criminal justice, law enforcement, courts, corrections, homeland security, crime prevention, juvenile justice, emergency management, fire prevention, and handling civil disturbances.
The Arts and Culture Commission works on NACo’s programs and services, helping county officials use the arts to promote economic development and solve challenges through workshops, field trips, publications, and annual awards.
The Resilient Counties Advisory Board guides NACo on sustainability programs, with members from both county governments and private organizations ensuring these initiatives are relevant and innovative.
The Rural Action Caucus (RAC) represents rural counties in discussions with Congress and the White House. Since 1997, it has been addressing important issues for nearly the 70% of America's counties that are rural.
NACo is a nonprofit organization that advocates for county interests in federal policy, promotes good county practices, develops leadership skills, shares knowledge, saves resources, and helps the public understand county government.
