A local foundation named Live Like Laura will host an inaugural 5K run and one mile walk as well as a kid’s run and walk at Hamlet Park Oct. 19.
Named for Cottage Grove resident and elementary speech pathologist Laura Schrankler who passed away in 2022 from complications following cardiac arrest, the Live Like Laura Foundation seeks to help students succeed, thus continuing Laura’s legacy.
Called Run Like Laura, the inaugural 5K, one mile walk and kid’s walk/run is one of many events the Live Like Laura Foundation puts on to support the Live Like Laura scholarship, given each year to a a Park senior or seniors planning to attend a two or four year postsecondary school and who demonstrate(s) a strong commitment to academics as well as the ability to foster connections among their peers. while actively participating in school athletics, clubs, and other activities.
Last year’s scholarship recipients from Park High were Becky Etten and Maggie Jensen, each receiving a $3,000 scholarship.
As for the Run Like Laura inaugural running event at Hamlet Park Oct. 19, the day will consist of three separate events: a kid’s run/walk at 8:45 a.m., 5K run at 9:00 a.m., and one mile walk at 9:15 a.m. Sponsors for the event include Anderson Race Management, Culver’s, and American Family Insurance agent Darin Husaby.
Refreshments will follow the one mile walk at 9:45 a.m.
Registration fees help fund the Live Like Laura Foundation Scholarship, the fees being $20 for the kids run/walk, $40 for the one mile walk, and $40 for the 5K Run. Find out more and register to run at https://lauraslightshineson.com/events.
