Basic Needs to hold first annual PIT Stop at Cottage Grove Armory

Basic Needs Inc. is hosting the first South Washington County “PIT Stop.” Sponsored by Van Meter, it is a one-day event to serve individuals and families in need. PIT Stop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the Cottage Grove Armory, 8180 Belden Blvd., Cottage Grove.
Every year, on a designated day, communities across the country conduct a Point-In-Time (PIT) count of all individuals experiencing homelessness. This nationwide effort helps communities like Washington County gain insights into the extent of homelessness, track progress in addressing the issue, and ensure that support and resources are directed where they are most needed (https://www.hmismn.org/point-in-time-count).
This one-day event is specifically designed to serve those in need, particularly individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The purpose is to serve unhoused individuals and those most at risk of becoming unhoused, by providing a warm meal, resources and other services, such as, personal care items, food and gas cards, baby items, winter clothes for adults and children, and school supplies. Attendees will also learn about county services available to them.
Any organization, church or individual can help by donating a variety of needs, especially diapers, canned goods, and funds for gas and food cards. Volunteers are also needed. Call 651-207-8565 to volunteer or donate. Basic Needs has been working with companies, churches and government organizations to facilitate this event. Van Meter, a Cottage Grove based electronics company, has sponsored the PIT Stop and provided major financial support, as well as trucks and infrastructure to load and haul donated supplies. King of Kings Church in Woodbury is providing the hot meal. This event is organized in collaboration with Washington County Community Services, Public Health and Environment Departments, and the Washington County Library.
